REPAIR GUIDE

Step by step

  1. 1
    Unplug the machine
Turn the washer off and unplug it. Switch off the water supply if you can reach it easily.
  2. 2
    Open the bottom hatch
Most front-loaders have a small square door at the bottom right. Pop it open with a flat screwdriver or a coin.
  3. 3
    Catch the leftover water
Put a towel and a shallow tray under the hatch. Unscrew the filter slowly — leftover water will come out first.
  4. 4
    Clear the filter
Pull out coins, hair, lint, and anything wrapped around the impeller. Rinse the filter under a tap.
  5. 5
    Check the impeller
Shine a light into the hole. The plastic impeller should spin freely. Remove any remaining debris.
  6. 6
    Refit and test
Screw the filter back until snug, close the hatch, and run a drain or spin cycle. The drum should empty.
